The clouds were moving in, the wind was rising, and the sun played hide-and seek along Lake Tahoe. This view from Zephyr Cove is one of my favorites in the region, looking across the lake into the wonderful Sierra where I've spent many summer days hiking. There is nothing like a winter day painting, and this is my effort to capture a bit of this amazing landscape!

December Sunshine by Julie Trail
What a gorgeous December day along the Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe. The willows shone with bright color. The aspen glowed white. The river trickled through patches of ice. Lots to see, the hardest part was creating larger shapes out of all the tangled patterns. I'll use this study and the photos to work on a studio piece, but this small tribute to a snowless winter at Lake Tahoe will always remind me of that glorious day!

Cottonwoods by Julie Trail
These old cottonwood trees growing along Sutter Creek always delight me with their tangled branches and wonderful colors, especially at this time of year! Ruth Andre and I painted this morning under mixed fog and sunshine in our ever challenging efforts to capture the lights and colors of the beautiful California foothills. What a delightful way to spend a few hours!
