Path to the Barn

Ruth Andre and I met up this morning just as the sun was peeking through the fog. We saw this scene from the parking lot of the Amador County Transportation Hub on Valley View Drive. The cows all had bells and rang a country tune for us as we painted. Here's my effort.

I really think the painting needs the cows. What do you think? Will blobs of reddish brown, to approximate cows ruin the expanse of multihued grass on this lovely hillside?

"Bridalveil" is a small painting of the beautiful falls in Yosemite.  They leave me speechless every time I see the falls from the meadow area.  In my painting there seems to be clouds dancing on the rim of view; winds were catching the water and creating veils of vapor before falling over the edge.

On view next week (Tuesday) after Thanksgiving at Seasons Restaurant  in Davis.  If you'd like to see the beautiful framing for these, see this post  .  If you'd like to read more about the artist, see website

Inspired by Joseph Raffael by Nancy Goldman

Inspired by Joseph Raffael
Image Size 22" x 30"
Watercolor
Unframed

I was inspired to paint this watercolor after visiting a Joseph Raffael exhibit.  His work is so beautiful and I have always loved borders on paintings.  I meant to paint the flowers in a looser, more impressionistic way but they didn't turn out that way.  J. Raffael uses lots of confetti types of color in his borders so I wanted to try that for this painting.

Pure abstract.  These are fun to paint and I hope fun to view . . .I didn't play Santana music ("Oye Como Va") while painting this, I played Celia Cruz.  Both are often-played music in my studio.

How's it going for you?

Cottonwoods by Julie Trail

These old cottonwood trees growing along Sutter Creek always delight me with their tangled branches and wonderful colors, especially at this time of year! Ruth Andre and I painted this morning under mixed fog and sunshine in our ever challenging efforts to capture the lights and colors of the beautiful California foothills. What a delightful way to spend a few hours!

A" Splash of Sunshine" on these wild shrubs made the cold November morning feel warmer! Nothing is more satisfying than painting out in the fresh air with my plein air friend, Ruth Andre, as we work to capture the beauty of the California Foothills with oils!

Cascading Oaks by Ruth Andre

While out painting with Julie Trail on Monday we headed down Stringbean Alley just outside of Amador City, California.  We decided to paint by the entrance to the Sutter Creek Gold Mine.  It was a cold morning with a heavy frost on the ground and 25-degrees.  Luckily the sun warmed the ground but since I was standing in a shady spot my toes and hands were cold.  I am wearing my Muck boots on the next outing.  The view was beautiful in every direction.  This little painting, "Cascading Oaks" was painted near the end of the session with me standing on one foot and then the other, trying my best to stay warm.  Seeing the muted colors of fall made for, "A Painting Day".

Painting out (en plein air) on location in the fall:   in one week in my area around Davis, CA we were painting in T-shirts in 80 degree weather; the next week we were painting in the high 30's / low 40's with frost lingering on the ground.  Time flees . . . fall is a beautiful season.
