Cascading Oaks by Ruth Andre

While out painting with Julie Trail on Monday we headed down Stringbean Alley just outside of Amador City, California.  We decided to paint by the entrance to the Sutter Creek Gold Mine.  It was a cold morning with a heavy frost on the ground and 25-degrees.  Luckily the sun warmed the ground but since I was standing in a shady spot my toes and hands were cold.  I am wearing my Muck boots on the next outing.  The view was beautiful in every direction.  This little painting, "Cascading Oaks" was painted near the end of the session with me standing on one foot and then the other, trying my best to stay warm.  Seeing the muted colors of fall made for, "A Painting Day".

Harbor View by Ruth Andre

The painting above was the last one painted while in Fort Bragg.  I stood in the shelter of the bridge pilings and shifted my focus to this cluster of trees leaning into the harbor.  The sun was moving in on one side and the the fog and the wind on the other side.  It was getting cold as I packed my gear to head back to Sutter Creek.  The group of painters all said good-bye and off we went.  The time together went by quickly and we all shared some a good times together.  I look forward to meeting up again for another paint out in the future.  Loved being on the California coast that made for, "A Painting Day".

Foothill Oaks by Ruth Andre

I have been away from the studio for a few days.  There is a lot going on in my life right now and getting to the studio today was a pleasure very much missed.  I did not feel like jumping in to paint a large work or one that felt realistic, so out came a good size brush and a few bold colors.  It was a great warming up session and I feel like getting back to work won't be so hard for "A Painting Day".

White Cloud by Ruth Andre

The rain is still coming down here in Northern California.  The creek is way up and has been for several days.  It makes for a true adventure getting across the creek and out of the valley. I have spent these rainy days in the studio painting except to venture out to feed and bring the horses to the barn.  We all get wet and the horses are full of energy so I step quickly under the yellow slicker. The painting today is of a wild Mustang stallion.  You may remember the post showing the work in progress photo a few weeks back.  I am happy to say it is now finished and ready to enjoy and it made for "A Painting Day".

Kylie

This is a work in progress of a good dog friend, Kylie.  She is a sweet Australian Shepherd and is owned by Jim Ginney, my good friend and painting framer.  Kylie is the official studio greeter and it is such fun to see her on my many runs to the framing studio.  I still have to add a few changes to Kylie's portrait but the likeness is there so I am pretty happy with the painting for now.  I will be adding the final changes in a day or two.  Meeting the sweet Kylie has made for, "A Painting Day".

You are invited to:
Gallery Show at the Gem N I Gallery - 815 Sutter Street, Folsom, CA.

Ruth Andre Painting - Texas Night

Texas Night

My friend, Sarah, has an eye for photography and the reference photo for the painting today is one from her collection of photos.  I think she found this Texas Longhorn Cow, I have called, "Texas Night", at a horse and cattle show in Grass Valley.  Sarah has several talents beside her photography.  She is also a clay artist Sculpting and designing Stoneware Buttons.  You can find her beautiful works at Palomino Blue Etsy Store .  Meeting Sarah has made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting-Painting at Home

I am sharing a photo of a painting in my Northern California home of my mare Mystery.  It is 60x40-inches, what one would consider a large painting.  My home is quite small, almost cabin like, and the large work exhibits well in the small space. Never be afraid to purchase a large painting.  You will fall in love with the painting and it will become part of your home.  Something to consider when out shopping for a piece of art.  Being an artist and a horse owner has made for "Painting Days".

Ruth Andre Painting-Lunch Date

Have  you been to Volcano, California?  The main street is about a block long and the buildings that line the street were built during the "Gold Rush" era.  There are some fun places to shop and to eat with a theater for a bit of drama.  This little painting is of two old oak trees at the far end of town, near the old jail that still stands today.  Taking a road trip to Volcano made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting-Standing Tall

On the way to Galt, California to buy a few bales of hay for our three hay eaters.  My husband was at the wheel of the truck when he heard me say, Stop.  I saw this beautiful paint gelding in the field near the road and wanted to get out and take a look at him.  This stoic fellow was very happy to have company and seemed willing to pose as I took a few photos.  Paints are a beautiful breed.  Their coloring is always a lovely surprise, like puzzles in a box.  Heading to Galt made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting - "Half Wild"

There are a few paintings in the many that come off the easel that you become attached to and actually want to keep for yourself.  I try not to do this and after being an art representative in Los Angles several years ago would tell my clients not do that very thing.  Paint it, learn from it and move on to the next painting.  With that said this little filly, half Arabian and half Mustang, has a place of honor on a little easel all of her own in my kitchen.  I visit with her daily.  For some reason this little one caught my heart.  The story goes that her mother, the Mustang, jumped the fence to be with her soon to be daddy, the Arabian stallion and Half Wild is what became of the union.  I kind of like the idea that the Mustang mare still had a wild streak.  Being half wild made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting - Seville

Today two veterinarians were here to do a small surgical procedure on my mare.  My studio is in the barn so while the vets worked I stayed out of the way and decided to bring out yet another tiny 3x3-inch canvas and paint.  I am  not a nurse and am kind squeamish about medical matters so painting was a good idea.   I chose to paint a lovely mare named, Seville.   Hiding out in my studio made for, "A Painting Day".

Today I was at my framer's studio to pick up a few framed works.  This wee 3x3-inch painting made me smile.  It is one of two paintings that may be a tiny diptych - 'Ellie & Kate".  Kate is waiting for her frame so I will show Ellie all dolled up.  Heading to Placerville to see Jim and Sarah made for "A Framing Day".

Ruth Andre Painting-Sunday Stroll

Texas Longhorn Cattle are part of America's history.  They roamed wild across the prairie lands.  I visited a Texas Longhorn breeder, Alamendra Longhorns, owned by Pete and Ginny Boyce in Manteca, California a year or so back.  I got a tour of their ranch and even climbed a barbed wire fence to take a few photos.  The GATE was way over on the other side of the pasture so over I went. Longhorn cattle are majestic in their own right.  I love seeing their many colors, strong physique and their magnificent long horns.  I do appreciate Pete for taking me around his ranch.  Meeting Pete Boyce and seeing his Texas Longhorn herd made for, "A Painting Day".     EMAIL: almendralonghorns@hotmail.com

Ruth Andre Painting-Rushing Creek

There are so many paintings to be made just outside my studio door.  This one was taken just south of Sutter Creek off of  the old Hwy 49.  The leaves had just started to change from the dark green of summer to oranges and rusts of fall.  The current in the creek was strong and it was a beautiful scene.  Painting close to home made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting-Shaded Oaks

I met with a local group of artists and we headed for Amador Lake here in the foothills.  It was a perfect day and just out side my oak covered covey I saw this group of oaks in the shade of the mountain.  I loved the blues and greens and the subtle grays I saw while painting the oaks.  There is  nothing quite like painting outside from life.  There are so many colors to be found.  Being on the lake in Amador made for, "A Painting Day".

Encinitas

I usually post Western works but today I am  heading down to the coast to Encinitas and posting a landscape painting from my painting archives. As I mentioned yesterday I have a sick horse and I am a bit overwhelmed with my horse doctoring schedule and will post a few landscapes for a few days.  I love getting out of the studio with my paints.  These are my bit of fun in the sun paintings.  Encinitas was my home a few years back.  It is a lovely ocean community.  Heading back to Encinitas made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting-Valentine

This is a painting I completed awhile back. It is of a beautiful Appaloosa mare. I have a very sick horse at home right now and spending my time going back and forth to the pasture to medicate Angel's eye every two hours. It is so sad to see this lovely mare in distress. I did get a painting started today and if all is good tomorrow I will be sharing a just completed horse painting. Being the medic made for," A Stop & Go Painting Day".
