New Impressionist Figure

Oil 11x14 on panel
"After the Rain"
I just finished this one. I used both a palette knife and brush. Figures are getting easier for me but I'm still not getting the look I want. Need more practice...

"Gold Lakes Summer", acrylic on canvas,

24" x 30", available unframed

$1000.

please contact through email if interested in purchase ~

New work going up soon at Seasons Restaurant, downtown Davis!  This is one of the paintings to be hung at the restaurant.  It's unusual for me because I don't usually work in acrylic on canvas;  in acrylic I usually paint on paper.  I was reading about a technique new to me and decided to try it on canvas, with the reference photo below that I've had in my photo library for several years.  The reference photo is from the Gold Lakes region of the Sierras, between Grass Valley and Graeagle .

It was fun to work out the composition on this one - it's fun when you feel it's successful !

20" x 30", available

Large plein air painting completed July 6, 2012

$1200.

I painted over successive evenings en plein air and posted the progress on my blog  .  It was a good painting challenge for myself and I finally got to painting the pomegranate shrub (tree!) that blooms with the incredibly beautiful vermillion-colored blossoms in early summer . . . everyone seems to have a story of eating pomegranates as a kid, their grandmother's tree or the different colored fruit they found at the farmer's market.

They're beautiful when in bloom and in fruit.  Like pears, artists love to paint pomegranates . . .I know I do!

Encelia is a beautiful blooming shrub that you see arrayed along desert hills, blooming right now in the desert.  'Incienso' is the name in Spanish;  it's a member of the sunflower family.  I painted this to capture the beautiful pattern of leaves and the flower stalks, bending in the breeze and radiating towards the sky.

Lately I've been painting and drawing figurative  . . . people, animals and birds.  It's a new exciting subject for me as an artist, so much focus on landscape in the past.  Recently it's been the right time to dive into figurative:  portraits and the entire figure.  Look for more to follow!

I love painting florals, and copper.  This recent painting was painted from life - of course! The copper vessel at the left is a very old object that I'd recently found at my mother's house; through all the patina there are still areas of warm copper that shine through.  Copper is a beautifully varied color.

"Bridalveil" is a small painting of the beautiful falls in Yosemite.  They leave me speechless every time I see the falls from the meadow area.  In my painting there seems to be clouds dancing on the rim of view; winds were catching the water and creating veils of vapor before falling over the edge.

On view next week (Tuesday) after Thanksgiving at Seasons Restaurant  in Davis.  If you'd like to see the beautiful framing for these, see this post  .  If you'd like to read more about the artist, see website

Pure abstract.  These are fun to paint and I hope fun to view . . .I didn't play Santana music ("Oye Como Va") while painting this, I played Celia Cruz.  Both are often-played music in my studio.

How's it going for you?

Painting out (en plein air) on location in the fall:   in one week in my area around Davis, CA we were painting in T-shirts in 80 degree weather; the next week we were painting in the high 30's / low 40's with frost lingering on the ground.  Time flees . . . fall is a beautiful season.
