LAYERS OF THE NIGHT BY SUSAN RODEN

LAYERS OF THE NIGHT
6"w x 4"h pastel

At first glance, all was dark...

subdued and moody tones coating the sky.

At second glance, thin ribbons of colors were revealed...

streaking, as hot flashes.

Transitions I-VI by Nancy Goldman

Transitions I - VI

Here are six non-representational paintings I did for a contemporary art show starting on Friday night and going for a week.  All of the paintings in the show are $99.00 or less.  There are some really interesting paintings in the show and if you enjoy contemporary art, it's worth a visit.

These six paintings are painted to flow together but also stand alone as individual paintings.  They can be hung vertically, horizontally or even in a circle (with all six) because the design is continuous through all of the pieces.

These are acrylic paintings on 12" x 12" gallery wrapped canvases with the sides painted black and they don't need frames.
These are hung vertically in the gallery.
The regular price of these paintings is $150.00 each but during this show only, they are $99.00 each or all six for $550.00.
The show is at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in downtown Santa Ana.   The opening for this show is this Saturday, Oct. 2nd from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m.  This gallery is part of the Santa Ana Artists Village and the first Saturday of each month (this Saturday) is their art walk from 7:00 - 10:00 when galleries and artists workshops are open to the public.  There are wonderful restaurants here also and it's a fun evening out.  I hope you can stop by the OCCCA and say hi on Saturday.  I will be there for sure from 6:00 to 8:00 and then I'm going to check out the other art and food venues myself.  I hope to see you there.  I will also be there on Friday night from 6:00-8:00 but if you come that night, the art walk won't be happening.  This is a grab and go show so some of the artwork may be purchased Friday night and gone before the art walk.

The address for the OCCCA is 117 North Sycamore, Santa Ana, CA  92701

Equine Pastel Drawing "Topaz" by Theresa Paden

"Topaz"
By Theresa Paden
#5 of 50 Horses in 50 Days
8" X 8" Pastel on paper
$150.00
15% of the sale will be donated to California Coastal Horse Rescue
As I mentioned yesterday, I'm taking a three day workshop in Pasadena,
Today at the workshop, Leslie demonstrated how to create
a beautiful painting without a paint brush!.
It's amazing what she can do using only a palette knife!
Then we all painted vibrantly colored boats in a harbor,
with our palette knives, using oils on panels.
It was lots of fun and we learned a lot.

This pastel drawing of a beautiful blue-eyed horse
is number 5 of 50 Horses in 50 Days.
If you're interested in purchasing it, please email me.

"TUESDAY IN NEWPORT " #1

taking timeout with a good friend, we went down near the cannery in Newport when I photographed this for I thought "Here is my next painting" The colors of the water, the shapes of the boat all made for good composition for the above painting.

AT THE BLUE MESA BY SUSAN RODEN

AT THE BLUE MESA
11"h x 14"w pastel on wooden panel + gold leaf frame
$625 + $25 insured priority shipping

Remember that old saying "Time flies"? It definitely does.

I was just reminiscing about my travels to the Petrified Forest
National Park and amazed that it has been one year, since I was
juried as one of the Park's 2009 Artist-in-Residents.

I lived within a three-room historical adobe at the Park for
two weeks and painted non-stop from early morning to late
evening. True bliss!

Above is a pastel on a primed wooden panel, which greatly enhanced
the texture of rough rocks. And the mountainous scene is one
of many located along the 3 1/2 mile loop leading from the Park's
main road to the Blue Mesa Trail.

Art to Benefit California Coastal Horse Rescue

I am very excited to announce that starting today I will be
painting and drawing 50 horses in 50 days and 15% of the profits will be
given to California Coastal Horse Rescue in Ojai. The equine artwork
will consist of drawings and paintings. Some will be small
and some larger. The styles will also vary and will include
impressionistic, expressionistic, and abstract.

California Coastal Horse Rescue in Ojai provides food, shelter,
rehabilitation, medical care, and adoption services for horses that have
been abused, abandoned or neglected. This is an opportunity for
me to help those horses. It's also going to be a growing experience
for me as an artist. I hope you will follow along and watch
my progress over the next 50 days!

WILD FLOWERS AT EAGLE NEST BY SUSAN RODEN

WILD FLOWERS AT EAGLE NEST
10" x 8"w pastel
Courtesy of Tirage Gallery*
* contact for purchase

This grove of wild flowers is where I was traipsing
around for hours, before I discovered I was stranded.

Lovely....

I was smack dab in the center of Catalina Island for hours,
mesmerized with the sights and colors.

There I go... with my head in the clouds and ducking the rain drops!

Fortunately I finally spotted and flagged down a
Catalina Conservancy Employee tooling down the road,
who radioed a ride for my return to Avalon.
(no, it wasn't a garbage truck as Tirage claimed)

This is one of my paintings included within the Colors of Catalina
show, comprised of four participating galleries of the Pasadena Art
Association. Works may be viewed now at the galleries, with mutual
open house receptions on Saturday, October 9th, from noon to
5:00 p.m. Myself and many of the exhibiting Artists will
be in attendance.

This is a show not to be missed - hope to see you there!

Ruth Andre Painting-Lunch Date

Have  you been to Volcano, California?  The main street is about a block long and the buildings that line the street were built during the "Gold Rush" era.  There are some fun places to shop and to eat with a theater for a bit of drama.  This little painting is of two old oak trees at the far end of town, near the old jail that still stands today.  Taking a road trip to Volcano made for, "A Painting Day".

"Lunch Meeting"-5x5-inches, oil/canvas-Framed by Ruth Andre

Desert Plants

Mother Nature Sculpts

Opetunia Burbanki
36" x 48"
Acrylic on Canvas
$ 3500.00

I see desert plants as sculptures created by nature.

This painting represents a thornless type of Prickly Pear which was developed in the hopes it could feed free range cattle in arid conditions.  It was not successful as such, but makes a fabulous addition to a desert landscape.  This particular painting was inspired by a plant in the Southern California desert.

When painting desert plants, I take artistic liberty with the color and shape of the plant and it's flowers to enhance the composition and chosen palette.

Ruth Andre Painting-Standing Tall

On the way to Galt, California to buy a few bales of hay for our three hay eaters.  My husband was at the wheel of the truck when he heard me say, Stop.  I saw this beautiful paint gelding in the field near the road and wanted to get out and take a look at him.  This stoic fellow was very happy to have company and seemed willing to pose as I took a few photos.  Paints are a beautiful breed.  Their coloring is always a lovely surprise, like puzzles in a box.  Heading to Galt made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting - "Half Wild"

There are a few paintings in the many that come off the easel that you become attached to and actually want to keep for yourself.  I try not to do this and after being an art representative in Los Angles several years ago would tell my clients not do that very thing.  Paint it, learn from it and move on to the next painting.  With that said this little filly, half Arabian and half Mustang, has a place of honor on a little easel all of her own in my kitchen.  I visit with her daily.  For some reason this little one caught my heart.  The story goes that her mother, the Mustang, jumped the fence to be with her soon to be daddy, the Arabian stallion and Half Wild is what became of the union.  I kind of like the idea that the Mustang mare still had a wild streak.  Being half wild made for, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre Painting - "A Shady Spot"

My work is usually pretty quiet and subtle with shades of muted colors and grays but today I am showing a little wild painting called "A Shady Spot".  It was painted on location at the Amador Flower Farm here in the foothills.  The daylilies were bright and bountiful under the big oak trees.  Enjoying the flower fields made for, "A Painting Day"
